Category
The category this music video falls into is performance and narrative. It is a performance video as you can clearly see the band performing in different cuts throughout the video witch takes place outside under a huge tree in the countryside. The narrative of the music video takes place throughout the video, in the same setting the band is performing in outside in the countryside. The narrative involves a boy and girl at first, and then introduces a lot of other people plying a part in the narrative.
Genre of the song
The genre of this song and music video is alternative rock, pop punk and indie. You can tell this by the way the band is performing, along with the beat and tune of the song.
The artist, song title and genre of music
Artist- You Me At Six
Song Title- Stay With Me
Genre Of Music- Alternative rock/pop punk.
Use of Props/ costumes
There is no specific costumes or props used within this music video. The band is just wearing normal casual clothes like jeans, shirts and jackets. The people in the narrative of the music video are just dressed in a vest and jeans, as the weather within the video looks quite warm. As they are just wearing casual clothes it shows the band to looked quite relaxed and just basic. Since they are in their own clothes and nothing fancy then it shows that the band are more about their music then about showing off big labels and brands. The main props that are used within the video are the items in which people are burying such as; a framed picture, a diary and a tambourine. Another main prop is the truck that we see at the start of the video, which the young man is driving.
Below are pictures of the truck and the framed picture being burried.
Special effects
There are no specific special effects used within this video as it’s quite a natural video. The only effect that I think is used is during the narrative when the people have buried their possessions and poured water on them, like you do with a plant when you want it to grow. And you see them waiting, then hands appear from under the ground and the people they wanted to have back, come back. But there aren’t any major special effects as it’s not that type of video or even genre that use a lot of special effects.
Goodwin’s theory
You me at Six’s video to ‘Stay with me’ demonstrates different area’s of Goodwin’s theory throughout their video. The genre of the music video is shown through their style of performance and their characteristics.
They are performing using all their instruments and no specific special effects which shows the band to be quite laid back and mainly about their music, similar to bands such as ‘Kids in glass house’s, and All time Low and Forever the sickest kids’ All of which fall into the same genre of alternative rock, pop punk. There’s a slight relationship between the lyrics and visual as the lyrics are about being with someone, and want someone to stay with you, and the visuals show people trying to get that one person back to stay with them, therefore there is a slight relationship but nothing major.
There is a relationship between music and visuals as the music and the beat and tone of the song is quite soft and seems quite serious which matches the pace of the visuals and the meaning of the visuals within the video. The song as a whole is quite serious, with a clear meaning behind it.
There isn’t a huge amount of close ups, but there is quite a few used, which are used to show the artist’s in a clearer view, and so the audience can recognize them more. There isn’t any intertextual reference’s that I can notice clearly or see within the music video.
Locations
There is only one main location in this video and that is what looks like a field, which is surrounded by multiple fields in the countryside. Both the performance and the narrative take part in the same setting, with one main place that you notice in both areas’ which is the huge tree. The performance takes part around and under the tree, and the narrative features the tree. There is only one location in the video however it doesn’t make it look boring or anything, as the location is quite interesting and looks really nice.
Lighting
There isn’t any specific lighting within the video as it is all outdoors it is mainly natural lighting. As the lighting is quite bright it could suggest that the time of day might be sunrise or even sunset. It looks like it is spring/summer time within the video due to how bright it is and the color of the sky, unless it has been edited to make it seem brighter and clearer. As it is quite bright is sets a good atmosphere within the video and creates a happy and content feeling, compared to if it was dark and dull.
Editing
The editing within the video isn’t to fast paced, however there is a lot of fast cuts to different area’s and close ups. The editing style matches the pace and beat of the song, and isn’t to fast like during a dance or pop video. The song is more fast paced and upbeat during the chorus compared to the versus as these are quite slow. A few timed during the, Shallow dept of field is used; one of the times is as a girl comes into focus when walking through the field. Other then that there isn’t a lot of editing used.
The cuts in the video jump from areas of the narration to different areas of the band performing.
Camera Work
An establishing shot is used at the start of the video to show the location, and also shows a car driving up the path. There are a lot of long and medium shots of the band performing, and then of the car driving and people walking holding specific items in their hands. Close up’s are used on the bands faces, and different parts of their instruments to help the audience recognize them clearer. Along with close ups of the items the people are beginning to burry, this is to show these are important items. There is a lot of high and low angles of the band performing, which also involve the band singing directly into the camera, this creates a more intimate effect.
Craig Davis Analysis
I think You Me At Six’s Song and music video fits into the ‘Amplification’ category as it has both performance and narrative within it. However both the narrative and performance and quite straight forward.
There is still a direct link to the song through the beat and sound of the song even though the lyrics do not clearly relate to the music, there is still a link. The narrative of the song is quite simply and straightforward, with a meaning. It has quite serious lyrics and a serious video, no comedic effects appear in this video.
