Use of technology

Whilst filming, we only used two types of technology which was the digital camera and the tripod. All our filming was done outdoors and on the streets so we haven’t used the studio therefore we haven’t used any special effects with lighting or used the green screen within our filming. All the lighting in our video is natural lighting from outside so it looks quite dull and gloomy as the day we were filming the weather wasn’t that good.
It was really windy when we were filming, this could affect the quality of our footage as the camera was quite hard to keep still for a length of time as the wind was strong.
As we haven’t used a mixture of different technologies and effects, it shows that our video is just simple and basic which is the style that we wanted to aim for.An advantage of using a digital camera with the memory card is that we can repeat filming different scenes until we think we have the perfect one, and all the others will still be saved on the camera. Therefore we can easily look through and check the other videos to see if we could use any other parts.

Another advantage is that we can watch our recordings there and then to see if they are decent, and whether or not we need to re-shoot. The digital camera we used wasn’t an expensive camera, it was just a standard basic camera but it worked well and produced some good shots with a good quality which we can use.I think our footage has been filmed to a high standard is a decent quality of footage. The lighting on some shots might not be the greatest however that can’t be helped as we filmed outside and it was a dull morning, we will edit some of the shots and see if we can make them better.
We used the camera hand held for certain parts of our filming as the tripod sometimes didn’t keep the camera as still as we wanted, and by hand holding it we were able to get a tight grip on it. We also used the camera hand held to film shots such as establishing shots or the area and on one particular scene when we did a 360 degree turn around Doug as he stood still singing. Using the camera hand held creates a shaky effect which is what we wanted.

The song lyrics for our chosen song, Architects-Heartburn. Along with a couple of screen shots from the music video & the actual music video

Burn everything you have

And leave it all behind

Lose all your inhibitions

I'll take the mess you made

And I'll make it beautiful

Oh if time only stood still forever

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile again

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile again

This moment that we're in

Is slow and disappointing

Time will never stand still forever

If you take this chance we got

We can make it beautiful

If you'd take my word

I'd be your savior

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile again

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

I'll be the one to make you smile again

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

Hold out your hand and lean upon me

Burn everything you have

And leave it all behind

Lose all your inhibitions

I took the mess you made

And I made it beautiful

Oh if time only stood still forever, forever

Detailed analysis of a music video

Lonely Island – Jack Sparrow

The category

The music video would be categorized as a narrative video. The video is a narrative video because throughout the video the Hip-hop group Lonely Island and Michael Bolton give a narrative storyline, which clearly follow the lyrics of the song. For example Michael Bolton acts out the lyrics by dressing up as captain Jack Sparrow and other known celebrities.

The genre of the song

The genre of this music video is a rare genre, which is a mixture of Hip-Hop and Comedy. You can tell from the lyrics and visuals of the song as the video is all about intertextuality as they parody all known iconic celebrities. The video makes the audience laugh as they make the lyrics comedic so this shows the genre aswel.

The artist, song title and genre

Artist- The lonely island (ft. Michael Bolton)

Song Title- Jack Sparrow

Genre- Hip-hop/Comedy

Use of props and costumes

Throughout the video there is a mixture of costumes and props. Lonely Island wear suits throughout the video, which shows the rich and hip-hop side of the genre of the music video. They use props such as money as they throw it around in the picture below, and this shows the wealth of the genre the group is in that they are able to throw money about without a care. Michael Bolton changes his costume to follow the lyrics of the song. He makes the genre of comedy stand out and clearly shows intertextuality, For example the lyrics “My name is forest Gump”, he was wearing a white suit and make up that is similar to the iconic film character played by Tom Hanks. When Michael Bolton is imitating Scarface, he uses a huge iconic prop of the Tommy gun; this shows the comedy side and makes the props of the video to make a clear intertextuality.

Special effects

The video does not have many special effects, until the middle of the video. When Michael Bolton is dressed as Jack Sparrow on top of a pirate ship there is green screen in the background of a perfect blue sky with nice white clouds. This emphasizes the role of Jack Sparrow being a parody to the video making it follow the genre of comedy as he is suppose to be sailing the seas with a perfect blue sky. The only other effect in the video is at the end when Scarface played by Michael Bolton, uses his Tommy gun the bullets and fire that comes out of the gun is used by effects to give it a more dramatic scene when he uses the gun and follows the intertetuaility of the film character, Scarface.

Goodwin’s Theory

The video follows key genre characteristics, which are stylish, and smart looking costumes showing their wealth as a pop star. For example when they are throwing money around like they are pennies to them. There is a clear relationship between the lyrics of the song to the visuals of the video, as they sing about Scarface taking cocaine and the iconic dress code is seen in the music video on Michael Bolton sniffing the cocaine. The music and beat of the song go with the visuals as the rapping sequences are all shot in the club and are edited to the beat. The chorus is cut to a single shot of Michael Bolton on the beach and again the editing cuts from long shots, medium shots to close ups cut to the beat of the chorus. There is a close up shot of Michael Bolton when he first enters the room at the beginning of the music video saying ‘I’m sorry I’m late I got caught up watching the pirates of the Caribbean marathon’. The song is based on pirates of the Caribbean when its not supposed to be so that shows you where he got the idea and throughout the music video there were many close up shots of The Lonely Island and Michael Bolton. There is reference to the treatment of women’s bodies in the costume they are wearing, as they are more revealing than normal clothes and this is also referenced in the lyrics “ I want to take you home and F*** you twice”. The music video does follow mainly overall the theory behind a music video by Goodwin.

Locations

The first location in the music video is the studio as they are recording the vocals for the song and shows the side of hip-hop as we see the microphones and recording equipment. Showing the hip-hop side to the video, as the band is laid back recording the music. The second and key location in the video is the club where the group lonely island are mostly in there for the whole video. This shows the hip-hop and stylish part of the music genre, as there music would be usually played in such locations as a nightclub. Other locations is by the sea and the beach where Michael Bolton is dressed and imitating the film character jack sparrow. These locations emphasis the comedy side of the song, showing the audience specifically what they are singing about. The other various locations also follow the same, to give a comedic effect, for example Scarface in his mansion with guns and drugs. All the locations shot in the music video clearly show the genre very straightforward for the audience.

Lighting

The lighting in the club is strobe lights of various different colours, which clearly shows the audience they are in a club. The use of lighting doing this will go along with the genre of hip-hop. The scenes where Michael Bolton is imitating films characters, the lighting in all those locations is from an artificial source with no natural light. As they are green screened and been made into a set where it was filmed. This is good to show the sense of comedy throughout the video by making film characters into a funny nature. The lighting in the music video differs from specific scenes to show the different elements to do with the genre of the music, of hip-hop and comedy.

Editing

The editing in the video is face paced throughout the video, as the beat and rhythm of the song is fast and the editing follows this to make the video fit into being a music video of this genre. The editing is faster compared to slower paced songs such as a ballad. The beat is mainly fast in the club and it goes much faster than other parts, with a fast cut rate to follow the beat at these parts of the video. The editing is simple and follows the fact the beat is fast and the editing follows this.

Camera work

The shots taken in this music video are mainly close ups, medium shots and long shots. The close ups used in this are to emphasis and market the group to the audience, to show how talented they are, but in terms of this video to show how they are funny and comedic in there music style. The medium shots are to show how they appear to the audience showing their clothes or costumes. For example, when they are in the club they are in suits to show their wealth and when Michael Bolton is dressed as Jack Sparrow showing the humour side of the music. The long shots are used when different locations are shown to set the scene and they establish what they are doing there. For example the long establishing shot of the beach and the sea, emphasize the use of making fun of the film characters showing the side of the genre of being comedic. Throughout the video the camerawork is done very similar to every other music video, which is in a similar genre, which shows it is good and follows the generic features of a music video.

Craig Davis analysis

Our group has decided that the video is a performance video following the idea of Craig Davis’ theory of a music video. The performance is a different performance from other videos as the performance in this video is more a comedy performance aiming to make the audience laugh. The lyrics follow the visuals of the song and the beat follows the lyrics and visuals to as they perform the music. There is links throughout the video following the lyrics to the music video and instruments following the music and pace of the editing. The video shows a clear view of the genre of hip-hop and comedy, as the visuals and lyrics follow each other and make the audience laugh and enjoy the music.

Music video Anaylsis

Category

The category this music video falls into is performance and narrative. It is a performance video as you can clearly see the band performing in different cuts throughout the video witch takes place outside under a huge tree in the countryside. The narrative of the music video takes place throughout the video, in the same setting the band is performing in outside in the countryside. The narrative involves a boy and girl at first, and then introduces a lot of other people plying a part in the narrative.

Genre of the song
The genre of this song and music video is alternative rock, pop punk and indie. You can tell this by the way the band is performing, along with the beat and tune of the song.

The artist, song title and genre of music

Artist- You Me At Six

Song Title- Stay With Me
Genre Of Music- Alternative rock/pop punk.

Use of Props/ costumes

There is no specific costumes or props used within this music video. The band is just wearing normal casual clothes like jeans, shirts and jackets. The people in the narrative of the music video are just dressed in a vest and jeans, as the weather within the video looks quite warm. As they are just wearing casual clothes it shows the band to looked quite relaxed and just basic. Since they are in their own clothes and nothing fancy then it shows that the band are more about their music then about showing off big labels and brands. The main props that are used within the video are the items in which people are burying such as; a framed picture, a diary and a tambourine. Another main prop is the truck that we see at the start of the video, which the young man is driving.
Below are pictures of the truck and the framed picture being burried.

Special effects

There are no specific special effects used within this video as it’s quite a natural video. The only effect that I think is used is during the narrative when the people have buried their possessions and poured water on them, like you do with a plant when you want it to grow. And you see them waiting, then hands appear from under the ground and the people they wanted to have back, come back. But there aren’t any major special effects as it’s not that type of video or even genre that use a lot of special effects.

Goodwin’s theory

You me at Six’s video to ‘Stay with me’ demonstrates different area’s of Goodwin’s theory throughout their video. The genre of the music video is shown through their style of performance and their characteristics.
They are performing using all their instruments and no specific special effects which shows the band to be quite laid back and mainly about their music, similar to bands such as ‘Kids in glass house’s, and All time Low and Forever the sickest kids’ All of which fall into the same genre of alternative rock, pop punk. There’s a slight relationship between the lyrics and visual as the lyrics are about being with someone, and want someone to stay with you, and the visuals show people trying to get that one person back to stay with them, therefore there is a slight relationship but nothing major.
There is a relationship between music and visuals as the music and the beat and tone of the song is quite soft and seems quite serious which matches the pace of the visuals and the meaning of the visuals within the video. The song as a whole is quite serious, with a clear meaning behind it.

There isn’t a huge amount of close ups, but there is quite a few used, which are used to show the artist’s in a clearer view, and so the audience can recognize them more. There isn’t any intertextual reference’s that I can notice clearly or see within the music video.

BetTil10$:Desktop:Screen shot 2011-10-10 at 10.23.39 AM.pngBetTil10$:Desktop:Screen shot 2011-10-10 at 10.23.14 AM.png

Locations
There is only one main location in this video and that is what looks like a field, which is surrounded by multiple fields in the countryside. Both the performance and the narrative take part in the same setting, with one main place that you notice in both areas’ which is the huge tree. The performance takes part around and under the tree, and the narrative features the tree.
There is only one location in the video however it doesn’t make it look boring or anything, as the location is quite interesting and looks really nice.

Lighting

There isn’t any specific lighting within the video as it is all outdoors it is mainly natural lighting. As the lighting is quite bright it could suggest that the time of day might be sunrise or even sunset. It looks like it is spring/summer time within the video due to how bright it is and the color of the sky, unless it has been edited to make it seem brighter and clearer. As it is quite bright is sets a good atmosphere within the video and creates a happy and content feeling, compared to if it was dark and dull.

Editing

The editing within the video isn’t to fast paced, however there is a lot of fast cuts to different area’s and close ups. The editing style matches the pace and beat of the song, and isn’t to fast like during a dance or pop video. The song is more fast paced and upbeat during the chorus compared to the versus as these are quite slow. A few timed during the, Shallow dept of field is used; one of the times is as a girl comes into focus when walking through the field. Other then that there isn’t a lot of editing used.
The cuts in the video jump from areas of the narration to different areas of the band performing.

Camera Work

An establishing shot is used at the start of the video to show the location, and also shows a car driving up the path. There are a lot of long and medium shots of the band performing, and then of the car driving and people walking holding specific items in their hands. Close up’s are used on the bands faces, and different parts of their instruments to help the audience recognize them clearer. Along with close ups of the items the people are beginning to burry, this is to show these are important items. There is a lot of high and low angles of the band performing, which also involve the band singing directly into the camera, this creates a more intimate effect.

Craig Davis Analysis

I think You Me At Six’s Song and music video fits into the ‘Amplification’ category as it has both performance and narrative within it. However both the narrative and performance and quite straight forward.
There is still a direct link to the song through the beat and sound of the song even though the lyrics do not clearly relate to the music, there is still a link. The narrative of the song is quite simply and straightforward, with a meaning. It has quite serious lyrics and a serious video, no comedic effects appear in this video.

Music video analysis

The category

The category of the music video is a mixture of performance and narrative It’s a performance video because you can clearly see the band multiple times throughout the video playing instruments in a garage to the beat of the song and you can see Tom who is one of the singers, singing in sync with the vocals. Its also a narrative video as the band travel to different places in the music video and the clips just carry on from where ever they’re going so it’s telling a story of where they’re going on that day and what they’re doing.

The genre of the song

The genre of the song we have chosen is alternative rock. You can tell the genre of music is alternative rock by the style it is played in with a distorted soft guitar riff and the energetic singing.

The artist, song title, the genre of the music

Artist- blink-182

Song Title- First Date

Genre of the music- Alternative Rock

Use of props, costumes

There is a wide range of use of props and costumes in the music video. First of all there are the costumes, the 3 members of the band (Mark, Tom and Travis) are all wearing 70’s style wigs on their heads, and this shows that the music video has a 70’s style theme to it. There’s also the clothing the band are wearing which consists of short shorts, high socks and old band t-shirts. By wearing these items it gives the video a classical look instead of a modern day look, as the band members and extra’s in the video are dressed like they’re from the 70’s. The guitarist/vocalist (Tom) also has a fake bushy, classic mustache which you don’t see too many of these days so that adds a good effect to the video. To the left you can see the 3 members of the band wearing 70’s style clothing.

The band uses a main prop throughout the video, which is a minivan, but it’s a classical typical hippy van with the white roof and the red doors. It also contains a worn out paintwork look and has curtains on the windows of the minivan its rare you’d see this being drove on the streets today, this again lets you know that the video is set back in the 70’s quite obviously. Another prop used in the classic 70’s burger and milkshake which was quite big back in the 70’s at truck stop café’s those foods are used in most classical films like grease etc., so its typical American food to use. There is a scene where a woman is riding a bike and a baseball hits her resulting in her falling off and scraping her braces on her teeth along the floor. The braces that the woman has on her teeth are old as it goes right around her face and this shows that it’s been set back in time as nobody has them anymore.
Below you can see a picture of the classical hippy mini bus and a picture of the old teeth brace on the woman.

Special Effects

The first special effect we see in the music video is the smoke flowing out of the minivan as the band members open the door and tumble out. This could symbolize that the band have been smoking marijuana and they are in a hippy van so it’s quite stereotypical but people from that sub culture used to do that back then. Another effect we see in the video is towards the end of the music video when the characters are dressed in all white clothing and Tom (lead guitar/vocalist) is wearing a different coloured wig this time its brown to possibly to make it stand out from the clothing. All the members have the wind blowing through their hair and the special effect that is used in this shot is the green screen in the background, which creates a sunset background on a hill as if the band members are stood there. There’s a shot after that, which uses green screen again only this time the members are stood in a field with a horse, this has no relation to the 70’s style theme, and the band just put those shots in there for some comedy. There are not that many special effects in this music video because it’s not really a video that’s suitable to contain special effects. The only time the effects are involved in the video is when the band is joking around. Below you can see 2 pictures from the music video using the green screen special effect.

Goodwins theory

Blink-182’s music video for “First Date” shows plenty aspects of Goodwin’s theory throughput the video. The genre is shown through characteristics to clearly demonstrate the genre, as they are using instruments, which look similar to every other alternative rock videos, e.g. Stratocaster guitars. The visuals in some aspects do relate to the lyrics, but only for certain parts of the video. The lyric “My stupid hair” relates to the visuals as they all have stupid hair, apart from that no other lyrics match the visuals. Making the video seem to not follow the typical theory of Goodwin, by going against them. The music follows the visuals as the genre type of music is stereotyped as being rebellious. The video has many shots through the narrative part of the video, e.g. when they push a child in the swimming pool. The video consists of close ups to develop their popularity and motifs from the demands of the record label. This clearly follows Goodwin’s theory, because when the video goes to the indoor location where they are performing there are several close ups of their faces and instruments as they play them. The video makes particularly voyeuristic treatments of women’s bodies. This is shown around 1.04 in the video, when the blonde woman is at the bonnet of the car and she is dressed in a sexy manner by wearing a crop top and tight shorts. Blnk-182 parodies their look with wigs and costumes of the band Bee Gees. This follows the theory of intertexualilty in Goodwin’s theory. The costumes the band is wearing relates to intertexuality. They all refer to another band name the Bee Gees. As they wear wigs that look outrageous which is iconic to the look of the Bee Gees, as their hair is wavy and 80’s style. The reference is shown all the way through the music video. The end of the video also spoofs many films that have a title sequence to what the characters all turn out to be and do after the film as ended. Titles come up as a frame is frozen on each of the band members with a couple of lines telling the audience what they are doing now.

Locations

The first location in the video is set in a messy and relaxing band practice room in a garage. The band is performing in this location throughout the video as it cuts from the narrative side of the video to the performing. The garage is full of posters and Christmas lights on the roof of the garage. The instruments take most the room up to emphasis their roll as a band and too sell their image to the pubic. Surrounding the instruments are speakers and recording equipment as they play and record their music. The second location seen is at an American style truck stop. Many other people are their such as women with revealing clothes and men trying to flirt with them as the band walk past staring at the girls as they get a burger. The next location is outside in a front lawn, where the band is playing baseball and a stereotypical geek with braces falls over onto the ground of her bike. The scenery is relaxed, with a worn out lawn with dull green grass. The people sit down on the sunbathing chairs and inside the red and white van. The atmosphere is full of laughter and fun, as they all laugh at the geeky girl. The next location is at a water park full of children and women who are seen as attractive. The atmosphere again is excited and energetic as they go to the water slide and look around as others are having fun. The variety of locations makes the video a lot more interesting to watch as an audience and not as dull as one location. The locations show how the alternative genre is fun and energetic to listen to.

Lighting

The lighting in he garage at the beginning and throughout the video it cuts back to is light up by many lights surrounding the band, such as lamps and Christmas lights. This is showing how they have no money to source there light any other way. The truck stop is set high key lighting from the natural light form the sun as they are outdoors. Simple lightning but very effective to make the video seem more happy and easy to watch compared to videos maybe set at twilight time. It is similar at other locations, as the video would have been filmed during a summer’s day outside in the naturally light up light. They do change lighting at the ending sequence as they sit outside the garage at night, so the lighting is very low key with the only source of light is coming from their garage and the light of the moon. The lighting in the whole video makes a good atmosphere and sense of them being an alternative band as they are usually happy and having fun.

Editing

The editing throughout the music video is very fast paced, with a lot of fast cuts to different shots. The fast paced editing matches the pace of the song in a way as the song is quite upbeat. Also the beat of the drum matches the editing pace to different shots within the video. During the video, slow motion is used a few times which helps it to create a comedy effect within the music video and make it quite funny to watch. There is a few times during the video when different editing transitions are used, as it cuts to a different shot. The editing in the video moves quite fast so it builds the need for viewing repeatedly. It also creates a experience of ‘jumping’, which involves going from the location to the person and then the instruments with no narrative continuity.

Camerawork

The start of the video is a low angle shot of the band as they walk into the garage talking, then shows them picking up their instruments and start playing.Throughout there is a lot of close ups on the singers face’s and their instruments. This could be used to help show the members of the band and for them to be recognized. Some extreme close ups are used on the singers face just showing his facial features. There is a mixture of high and low angle shots within the music video showing the band performing in what looks like a little garage.
When the band is performing the look directly into the camera a few times this gives a more intimate approach from the band to their audience. Long shots show the locations of the video, such as; a water park, back gardens and the garage. They also show the action, which is going on within the video, such as the band mucking around and having fun.

Craig Davis theory

Craig Davis AnalysisI would say that Blink 182’s music video for ‘First Date’ fits into the ‘Amplification’ category, as it is a mixture of both performance and narrative. There is a link to the song through the beat of the music, however the lyrics do not relate to the video in any way. The narrative of the video is quite mixed and isn’t really a simply narrative. The video follow on, but doesn’t match the lyrics. This is the case in most ‘Punk/rock’ video’s and a lot of other ‘Blink 182’ videos, therefore it could just be the genre style or the way the band likes to do things. The narrative for the music video is quite ‘loose’, looks fun and also has the comedy effect, rather then it being a simple or realistic video which would get boring to watch after a while. This helps the audience to be able to watch this video over again and not get bored.

weather

We have checked the weather forecast for next week when we begin filming on Monday the 10th October. The days when we will be filming, which are Monday’s, Wednesday and Thursday, the weather doesn’t look the best.

On Monday it is forecasted to rain quite heavy and to be windy. This would affect our costume plans for our video, as we would have wear coats and not just t-shirts.
Wednesday shouldn’t be to bad as it say’s it is only going to be cloudy, which would be good for the video, compared to if it was really sunny.

On Thursday it is suppose to be light showers, hopefully it will stop from time to time whilst we are filming then it wont mess it up.
I think filming in a light rain shower will look quite good for our video as it will create more emotion and seem quite moody and dull.
There are rumors of it snowing over the weekend, even though the forecast doesn’t show it. If it were to snow it wouldn’t be a bad thing as it would be quite effective within our video.

Locations

We have decided to Film part of our music video at Daisy Nook Country Park, as it’s quite an open area with plenty of places to film within it. As we are going to film during the day and not as weekend the Daisy Nook should be quite empty apart from a few people going for a stroll, dog walkers or people fishing as it has a huge lake. This will be better for us as we will be able to film without a lot of interruptions

It is a huge park with a lot of open spaces and therefore has plenty of different areas and locations for us to film different parts of our video there. This location fits well with our song choice compared to if we would have decided to use a busy location like Manchester city centre.

Daisy Nook is located in the end of Failsworth and towards
Ashton-Under-lyne. It is close to another Location, which we are planning to film parts of our video at, called ‘Failsworth road’.

Another Location choice is ‘Failsworth Road’ which is near to Daisy nook and located in Failsworth. It is a long road with not much but a field on the side of it. It has no houses along it until you get to the top of it and at the bottom. The road is surrounded by trees and fields on either side however it isn’t really busy or anything, you don't get many cars coming up and down it.
This is an ideal location as it will be quite empty and seems lonely, which would match the theme of the song. As we will be filming during the day, it should'nt be to busy so we will be able to get our filming done.

Both of our main locations are close together in Failsworth which is quite handy as two of our group members live here so the area is very familiar for us. As both locations are close we would be able to film at both locations in the same day without a lot of travelling and running out of time. We will switch between these locations within our video with cuts from one to another.

Detailed production treatment

The music video

Heartburn by Architects

Duration

3 minutes 40 seconds

Audience

Our main target audience is for the ages of 13-21, this will both appeal to males and females. It may attract other audiences of a older age as the song is a soft and gentle song with meaningful lyrics. It will appeal to the audience who like the alternative rock genre.

Resume

We will be having both performance elements and narrative elements throughout our music video of the alternative rock song “Heartburn” by Architects. The lyrics of the song will be clearly following the narrative side of the music video, as Thomas will be searching for a girl to help all her worries go away and on the way helping other people as his story follows the lyrics with the song. Douglas will be doing the performance side of the video whilst he walks down a empty road alone lip syncing and doing actions to emphasis his appearance as the singer. You will expect to see in this video, Thomas searching to help his love life and helping others on the way E.g. giving change to a homeless person. You will expect to see Douglas walking down an isolated street performing the song; through the work of lip-syncing and actions what you would typically see for the alternative rock genre.

Suggested Elements

Performance ideas- Thomas will follow the lyrics of the song ‘Heartburn’ by Architects, by performing a narrative story that follow the lyrics of the song. For example at the beginning of the song it says ‘Burn everything you have and leave it all behind’ and Thomas will be burning a picture and walking away from the camera in the distance. Douglas will be lip-syncing the lyrics of the song with appropriate actions to follow the lyrics and to keep with the genre of alternative rock.

Costumes- Douglas will be wearing casual clothing, t-shirt and denim jeans throughout the music video. Thomas will be wearing winter clothes because the day we are filming the video will be a cold day and it adds a dramatic effect to the song instead of the weather being sunny instead its dull. We are going to get some friends to star as extras in the video like a homeless man who Thomas helps. We are going to dress Sam up as a homeless man in tatty ragged clothing to make him look dull and convincing. We may also use some make up to make it look like he has a dirty face as if he’s not had a wash for a while. Another extra we are using is our friend called Alex who will be wearing winter clothing because of the weather when Thomas finally meets her at the end of the music video.

SFX- we will be using slow motion effects for the opening of the music video when Thomas is burning the photograph and throwing it on the ground. We are using this to show the audience the beginning of the narrative by showing them a key prop as he throws it away and moves on to someone else. We will be using a dull grey tint through the whole video to give the video an emotional effect.

Key locations- Douglas will be walking down an isolated road located in Failsworth. He will be lip-syncing the lyrics whilst performing actions that relate to the lyrics and genre. Thomas will be in an isolated area in Daisy Nook, which is a nature park/Forrest. He will be burning a picture in the Forrest and then walking off out of daisy nook. He will then be on a public street where there will be a homeless man sat up against a phone box that he will help.

Tom- Tom will be acting in the narrative side of the music video where he will be acting to the chosen song. He will also be directing the music video when he is not doing the narrative side of the video and filming the performance side of the video. He will also be editing the video when all the filming is done and creating a CD pack design.

Initial planning

The song we have all agreed to do is an alternative rock song by the British band Architects. The track is called Heartburn which is from their latest album “The here and now.” We picked this song with dedication to make a video that will make the audience watch the visuals become real and nice to look at. Ideas that were brought up by the whole group were to have one male from the group to lip sync the song and to make the other male do a narration which will follow the lyrics and visuals together. We are hoping to make our music video a mixture of performance and narrative.

Specific Idea’s for the video;

Chosen Song;
Architects
- Heartburn

Costume-

We won’t be using a specific costume or outfits for our music video, it’s just going to be everyday normal clothes nothing special. We think just Jeans and a t-shirt or something along those lines so it’s quite a casual look, but something that matches the genre and theme of the song. When we start to go out filming the weather wont be the best, it will be quite cold and maybe raining or even snowing therefore it will be best for us to be wearing winter clothes, hats, scarf’s and big coats.

Settings-
Some idea’s for settings and locations we are going to use are;

A quite road that isn’t too busy so we can film there without too many people being in the way, to also make it seem lonelier and it would match the look and pace of the song.
Some ideas are ‘Failsworth Road’, located in Failsworth. This is quite a long road, with little house’s and a lot of tree’s and fields located near and on it, so it looks quite empty and abandoned. As the song seems quite moody and emotional, we think this location would fit in with it perfect. This would be a good location to use when we film the singing scenes, or even for the narrative. Another idea could be the backstreets in Manchester. Daisy Nook is an idea of another location for us to use. It is a nature park/forest located in Failsworth. It would be a good location for us to use for our filming, and for the start of the video to be filmed at. If we film here during the day rather then weekend, then it will be quiet and we will be able to get on with our production.

Narrative-
we are going to have a simple narrative for our video as the song we have chosen to do is basic. One of our ideas is to film Doug walking down a lonely quiet road lip-syncing, maybe with a guitar in his hands as he’s playing it. Then have a narrative happening in the background. As the song we are doing is about helping people, ‘holding out your hand’ to help someone or be there for someone. An idea we have is for Tom to be walking around Manchester or a different location, and seeing people that need help with something. Specific things we could include are things such as giving a homeless person some change and just being friendly towards them, or helping someone that has fallen over, or needs help carrying bags, or someone who has dropped money or another item, and having Tom picking it up and giving it back to them. Then for the final scene we are going to bring a girl character into our music video.
We are going to start the video with Tom burning a picture of a girl, then he throws it on the floor, and we get a close up of the burning picture and Tom walking away. The next scene will cut to Doug walking and beginning to lip-sync to the lyrics.

Performance elements-

The performance in our video isn’t going to be a big performance in front of loads of people like a gig or anything. It’s just going to be a basic performance with a little lip-syncing, not sure weather or not to involve any instruments. We could have the singer walking whilst holding a guitar, that’s an idea we could try and see weather it would work, and look good or not. We wont be using a microphone or any pieces of equipment like that.

Specific Scene’s-
A specific scene within our music video will most probably be the end scene, which would bring the whole video together and to an end.
